1. The Big Picture: A $500 Billion Opportunity

India is on the edge of a major “intelligence revolution.” A new report by IBM and the government’s ‘IndiaAI’ initiative highlights that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can drastically change our economy.

  • The Impact: AI is projected to add over $500 billion to India’s GDP by 2030.
  • The Confidence: About 80% of business leaders believe AI will be the main driver of national growth.

2. Why India has the “AI Advantage” (Prelims Focus)

India has a unique combination of factors that make it a global leader in AI:

  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Our systems like UPI and DigiLocker provide a strong foundation.
  • Data Scale: Because of our massive population, India generates huge amounts of data. This data is the “fuel” needed to train AI models.
  • IT Muscle: Our world-class IT services sector gives us the technical manpower to build and run these systems.

3. The Challenges: The “Pilot Trap” and Skill Gap

Despite the optimism, there are serious “ground realities” that we must fix:

  • The Pilot Trap: 85% of Indian companies are stuck in the “experimental stage.” They test AI in small ways but fail to use it across the whole company. Only 15% have successfully scaled up.
  • Infrastructure Deficit: 77% of leaders say a lack of “secure cloud infrastructure” (safe digital storage and processing power) is stopping them from growing.
  • The Great Skill Gap: Currently, only 30% of workers have the AI skills needed. By 2030, we need this to reach 57% (about 350 million AI-literate people).

4. Strategic Concepts for UPSC (Value Addition)

To score high in Mains, use these specific administrative terms and frameworks:

  • IndiaAI Mission: The government has cleared over ₹10,300 crore to build our own supercomputers and help startups.
  • Sovereign AI: This means India should build its own AI systems and data centers so we don’t have to depend entirely on foreign tech giants. It is about digital independence.
  • #AIforAll (NITI Aayog): India’s philosophy that AI should help everyone, especially in farming (agriculture), health, and education.
  • DPDP Act, 2023: This law ensures that while we use AI, the privacy of Indian citizens is protected.

5. The Way Forward

India needs a three-part plan to succeed:

  1. Infrastructure: Build local data centers and high-speed processing power.
  2. Governance: Create clear rules that encourage new ideas but also ensure AI is used fairly.
  3. Skilling: Change our education system to teach AI skills to millions of students and workers.

With reference to the “IndiaAI Mission” and the AI landscape in India, consider the following statements:

  1. The IndiaAI Mission has been launched with a financial outlay to build indigenous computing capacity and democratize AI access.
  2. “Sovereign AI” refers to a strategy where a nation develops its own foundational AI models to ensure economic and digital security.
  3. According to recent industry reports, over 50% of the Indian workforce is currently AI-literate and ready for high-end AI deployment.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct? (a) 1 only (b) 1 and 2 only (c) 2 and 3 only (d) 1, 2, and 3

Correct Answer: (b) 1 and 2 only
