Why in the News?
Assam is witnessing one of its worst flood disasters in recent decades, with over 7 lakh people affected, more than 60 deaths, and extensive damage across Upper Assam, particularly Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. Unlike previous years, the floods have inundated areas that rarely experienced such devastation, highlighting a changing flood pattern driven by climate change and human activities.

What Triggered the Floods?
- Extreme Rainfall in Nagalang: The immediate trigger was very heavy rainfall in Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts of Nagaland.
- Although initially described as a cloudburst, IMD clarified that it was 137 mm of rainfall over 8–9 hours, which does not meet the technical definition of a cloudburst.
- This intense rainfall generated massive runoff into Assam through tributaries.
- Overflowing Tributaries: Unlike traditional Brahmaputra floods, this disaster was driven mainly by overflowing tributaries such as: Dikhow, Disang, Dhansiri, as well as other rivers flowing from the hills of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
- The already swollen Brahmaputra slowed the drainage of these tributaries, worsening flooding in Upper Assam.
Why is Climate Change Making Floods Worse?
- Climate change is changing the nature of monsoon rainfall. Instead of steady rainfall over several days, the region is increasingly experiencing:
- Short-duration but extremely intense rainfall.
- More frequent heavy rainfall events exceeding 50–100 mm in a day.
- Higher flood peaks and flash floods.
Even if seasonal rainfall remains close to normal, concentrated rainfall over upstream catchments can trigger devastating floods downstream.

- Deforestation: Rapid loss of forests in upstream catchments has reduced the soil’s ability to absorb rainwater.
- Without vegetation: Rainwater flows rapidly downhill, Soil erosion increases, Rivers receive larger quantities of sediment.
- Mining and River Valley Excavation: Excessive excavation and mining along river valleys increase soil erosion.
- Large quantities of mud and silt enter rivers, reducing their carrying capacity and increasing flood risk.
- Sedimentation: Continuous deposition of sand and silt raises riverbeds, making rivers overflow even during moderate rainfall.
