Imagine a Buddhist stupa potentially larger than the world-famous Great Stupa at Sanchi, hidden right in the heart of Madhya Pradesh! Recently, the state government decided to restart digging at a historic mound called Vaishya Tekri in Ujjain. This site was last explored almost 90 years ago before Independence.
Emperor Ashoka spent a decade in Ujjain as a young viceroy before becoming the great ruler of the Mauryan Empire. This fresh excavation aims to uncover the true scale of his legacy, find ancient Buddhist monasteries, and definitively prove if Ashoka himself commissioned this colossal structure.

2 · Tracing Ashoka’s Footsteps

Step 1: The Mauryan Hub
Ancient Ujjayini was the powerful capital of the Avanti province. Young Ashoka served here as a Viceroy (Kumara) under his father Bindusara for about 10 years.

Step 2: The First Dig (1938)
Almost 90 years ago, the Gwalior State found a massive stupa base (350 feet wide) and huge Mauryan bricks dating back to the 3rd century BCE.

Scientists estimate this stupa was over 100 feet tall—making it significantly larger and more ambitious than the Sanchi Stupa (which is 54 feet tall).

Ujjayini was a powerful capital. It served as a critical commercial crossroad linking Pataliputra to western coastal seaports like Broach and Sopara.

Ancient Money
Early excavations found punch-marked coins and cast ‘Avanti’ coins. These act as solid proof of the site’s 3rd century BCE Mauryan timeline.
The Kumara System

To manage the vast Mauryan empire, the King appointed royal princes (Kumaras) to rule key provinces like Ujjayini, Taxila, Tosali, and Suvarnagiri.
