| Relevance: Disaster Management, Industrial Safety & Migrant Worker Welfare | Source: News reports, 2026 |
1 · What happened
| On Sunday, 21 June 2026, a tragic ammonia gas leak at St Peter’s Paul Seafoods in Tamil Nadu claimed the lives of at least 5 to 7 women. Over 60 others were hospitalized, with many still fighting for their lives in the ICU. |
| The victims were mostly young migrant women from Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand. Resting in their dorms inside the factory on their only day off, they were trapped when the toxic gas escaped. A specialized NDRF rescue team was rushed in to contain the disaster. |
2 · Why ammonia, and why is it so deadly?
| Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3) is a cheap and effective cooling gas heavily used to freeze seafood. While great for business, it is a deadly poison when it escapes into the air workers breathe. |
|
Why Factories Use It
The Default Cooler
Ammonia freezes products fast, costs very little, and doesn’t harm the ozone layer (zero ODP). It is a global industry favorite.
|
The Rules
Laws Meant to Protect
Laws like the Factories Act require these plants to have tested Emergency Plans to protect workers. These rules only work if followed.
|
|
What It Does
Toxic on Contact
Ammonia violently attacks moisture in the eyes, skin, and lungs. It causes chemical burns and pulmonary edema, literally suffocating victims.
|
A Preventable Tragedy
Safety Failures
The factory had no working gas alarms and no fire hydrants. Worst of all, earlier official safety warnings were ignored.
|
- Accountability: The factory owner and manager were arrested for culpable homicide.
- State Response: The Chief Minister ordered a fast-track inquiry and a state-wide safety audit of chemical plants.
- Relief: Grieving families are receiving ₹2 lakh, and victims’ bodies are being sent back to their home states.
- The Migrant Trap: Built in isolated areas, these factories house workers right next to the processing units. During a leak, their home becomes a death trap.
