Nature is sending a loud warning from the Himalayas. Recently, massive flash floods in Nepal claimed nearly 800 lives and wiped out a huge part of their economy. While Nepal faces the immediate tragedy, the reality is that the entire Himalayan mountain range—connecting Nepal, India, and China—is deeply fragile.

1 · The Reality Check: Catastrophe in Nepal

The Infrastructure Trap: Building huge hydropower dams in highly sensitive mountain zones is a recipe for disaster. When a sudden flood hits, these concrete dams break, trapping workers inside and making the downstream flood much more violent.

  • China is building the Medog Hydropower Project—planned to be the world’s largest dam—on the Brahmaputra River, just across the Indian border. The big problem? This planned mega-dam is located dangerously close to a highly active earthquake zone (the Paizhen Fault).
  • If a major earthquake hits that area, this giant dam could break. It would instantly release a catastrophic tsunami of water and debris directly into India’s Northeast (Arunachal Pradesh and Assam), threatening millions of Indian lives and national security.

4 · Way Forward: What India Must Do

Stop Risky Construction. India must urgently review and stop building massive commercial dams in highly sensitive earthquake zones. We should not copy China’s risky, nature-destroying development models.
Decongesting Mountain Towns. Many Himalayan towns (like Joshimath or Shimla) are dangerously overcrowded with unregulated hotels. The government must legally and safely shift populations away from fragile, landslide-prone slopes to safer ground.
Transboundary Diplomacy. India must use strong diplomatic pressure to demand complete transparency from China. We have the right to know if the upstream Medog mega-dam is structurally safe, as its failure will directly hit Indians.

The devastating floods in Nepal remind us that the Himalayas cannot handle limitless human greed. Building mega-dams in fragile earthquake zones is an open invitation to mass destruction. India must lead by example—enforcing strict building rules, decongesting overcrowded mountain towns, and demanding accountability from upstream neighbours to secure a safe future.
