The E20 Fuel Policy:  A Green Revolution or a Burden on the Common Man?

Imagine going to the market and finding that the prices of everyday items like sugar, rice, and flour have suddenly shot up. At the same time, you notice your older scooter is giving you less mileage. Why is this happening? A major reason is India’s E20 Fuel Policy. The government is aggressively mixing 20% ethanol (an alcohol made from crops) with 80% petrol.

While the goal is to reduce our dependence on foreign crude oil, burning food crops for vehicle fuel has created unintended problems. It has caused food shortages and engine damage in older vehicles. Let us decode the hidden costs of this policy in simple terms.

1 · The Economic Clash: Food vs. Fuel

What is the “Food vs. Fuel” Debate? When fertile land and edible crops (like sugarcane, maize, and rice) are used to make fuel for cars instead of food for humans, it creates scarcity in the market. This automatically leads to high food inflation.

Protecting the Consumer. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) must ensure that regular, unblended petrol (E10 or lower) remains easily available at all fuel pumps. Forcing citizens to buy E20 and ruin their older, legacy vehicles is an unfair burden.

A truly strong economy cannot be built by sacrificing a nation’s food security for energy security. While reducing our dependence on expensive foreign crude oil is a vital goal, true sustainable development means powering our vehicles without emptying the common man’s plate or destroying his hard-earned assets. India’s green transition requires patience and better science, not just rushed targets.
