About Radha Govinda Baruah

Radha Govinda Baruah (1900–1977) was one of Assam’s most illustrious personalities who transformed journalism, entrepreneurship, sports administration, urban governance, and Assamese culture. Popularly honoured as the “Architect of Modern Assam”, he was also known as “Sinhapurush” (Lion Man) for his courage and “Rupkhanikar” (Architect of Beauty) for his institution-building vision.

Early Life and Education

  • Born on 17 October 1900 in Sivasagar, Assam.
  • Received schooling in Sivasagar, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh.
  • Pursued higher education at Cotton College, Guwahati.
  • Displayed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age by working as a thatch dealer, insurance agent, and running a small eatery in Kolkata to support his education.
  • Later studied accountancy and bookkeeping in Kolkata.
  • Worked with Mr. Cameron in establishing the first branch of the Imperial Bank of India (now State Bank of India) at Dibrugarh in 1921 and became its first Assamese employee.

Career in Finance and Insurance

  • Joined the Bombay Mutual Life Assurance Company as an insurance agent.
  • Became one of the top-performing insurance agents across Assam, Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
  • Recognised as a pioneer of the insurance sector in Assam by promoting financial literacy and insurance awareness.

Barua Press and The Assam Tribune

  • Established the Barua Press in Dibrugarh.
  • Launched The Assam Tribune as a weekly newspaper on 4 August 1939 with Lakshminath Phookan as its first editor.
  • Shifted the newspaper office to Guwahati in 1946.
  • The Assam Tribune became Assam’s first English daily newspaper on 30 September 1946.
  • Founded other major publications:
    • Axombani (1955) – Assamese weekly.
    • Dainik Asom (1965) – Assamese daily.
  • Maintained complete editorial independence, establishing a benchmark for ethical journalism.
  • Before The Assam Tribune, the only English newspaper published in Assam was Times of Assam (1895), founded by Radhanath Sangkakoti.

  • Co-founded the Assam Sangeet Sanmilan in 1954 with Dr. Tarini Mohan Baruah.

  • Instrumental in establishing the All Assam Music Conference.

About the All Assam Music Conference

  • Founded on 1 January 1954.
  • Established jointly by Radha Govinda Baruah and Dr. Tarini Mohan Baruah.
  • Aimed to:
    • Popularise Indian classical music in Assam.
    • Preserve Assamese folk music, dance, and indigenous traditions.
    • Provide a common platform for artists from across India and Assam.
    • Promote cultural exchange between classical and regional traditions.
  • Published the official journal Jhankar, with the first volumes edited by Maheswar Neog.
  • The Assam College of Music was established under the Conference in 1957.
  • The first conference was presided over by Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan.
