A new flowering plant species, Osbeckia assamensis, belonging to the Melastomataceae family, has been scientifically identified in the grasslands of Manas National Park, Assam. The findings were published in the international botanical journal Phytotaxa on October 22, 2026.
Key Facts
- Researchers: The species was described by Prof. Namita Nath of Gauhati University and Barnali Das of Pragjyotish College, Guwahati.
- Research period: The discovery followed extensive floristic surveys conducted between 2021 and 2025, during which the plant was recorded in scattered populations across Manas grasslands.
- Scientific identification: Although it resembles the previously known Osbeckia nayarii, it has distinct features, including a strigose (rough-haired) stem, hairy calyx margins and flower clusters containing 30–35 flowers.
- Plant characteristics: It is a perennial flowering shrub that grows approximately 2–2.5 metres tall and produces pink flowers.
- Research contribution: The researchers provided a detailed taxonomic description, photographic illustrations and comparisons with related species to establish its identity.
Exam Hook – Key Takeaway: The discovery of Osbeckia assamensis highlights the importance of botanical research and habitat conservation in understanding and protecting India’s biodiversity.
