The Government of Meghalaya has launched Mission Golden Spice, a ₹175.45-crore initiative to promote GI-tagged Lakadong Turmeric through expanded cultivation, value addition, processing and exports.

About Lakadong Turmeric

  • Lakadong Turmeric is a premium variety of turmeric grown mainly in the West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. 
  • The Lakadong variety is indigenous to the Meghalaya region of Northeast region.
  • Renowned for its exceptionally high curcumin content, it is increasingly gaining recognition in global health, food and nutraceutical markets. 
    • It has a curcumin content of 7–10%, compared to 2–3% in ordinary turmeric.
    • Curcumin is the natural compound responsible for turmeric’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and medicinal properties.
  • Its rich golden colour and distinctive aroma are the result of Meghalaya’s unique soil and climate.
  • It has received the GI Tag, recognising its unique geographical origin and quality.

About Turmeric

    • Turmeric is a flowering plant of the ginger family
    • It is a perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant that reaches up to 1 metre in height. 
    • It grows in diverse tropical conditions under temperature range 200-350 C 
    • It needs an annual rainfall of 1500 mm or more and thrives best in well-drained sandy or clay loam soils.
    • India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world. 
      • India produces over 70% of the world’s turmeric. 
    • More than 30 varieties of turmeric are grown in India and it is grown in over 20 states in the country. 
    • The largest producing states of turmeric are Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
    • The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry inaugurated the National Turmeric Board (NTB) with its headquarters in Nizamabad, Telangana.
  • NTB focuses on the overall development and growth of the turmeric sector in the country.
