India’s Javelin Missile Deal with the US

1 · The News

When border tensions rise suddenly, the Indian Army cannot afford to wait years for bureaucratic paperwork to clear before buying new weapons. Following a recent operational need (Operation Sindoor), India signed a deal with the United States to buy deadly Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs).
Instead of floating a global tender, the military used special ‘Emergency Financial Powers’ to buy these missiles directly from the US Government.

2 · How Emergency Procurement Works

Step 1: The Urgent Need
A sudden security situation requires immediate firepower. Standard buying rules take too long, leaving our soldiers vulnerable on the border.

The Defence Ministry allows the Armed Forces to skip normal red tape and fast-track urgent purchases up to ₹300 crore per equipment category.

Fire-and-Forget
The Javelin Tech
Once a soldier locks on and fires the Javelin missile, its internal infrared brain tracks the target automatically. The soldier can instantly run for cover.
Top-Attack Mode
Hitting the Weak Spot
Instead of hitting a tank on its heavily armored front, the Javelin flies up in an arc and strikes the roof of the tank, which is always its thinnest, weakest point.
Foreign Military Sales (FMS)
Govt-to-Govt Trust
A system where the US Government buys weapons from its own private contractors and supplies them directly to a friendly nation like India.
