1 · What happened

On 15 June 2026, Prime Minister Modi visited Slovakia, a small country in Central Europe. Its capital is Bratislava. This was the first time ever that an Indian PM visited Slovakia.

During the visit, the two countries decided to become closer friends — they raised their ties to a “Comprehensive Partnership.” Modi held talks with Slovakia’s PM Robert Fico, was given Slovakia’s highest state honour, and the two sides signed deals on defence, jobs, technology and trade.

2 · The Story in Simple Words

Why bother with a small country like Slovakia? Two reasons. First, Slovakia is a member of the European Union (EU) — so a friend there is a friend inside the powerful EU club. Second, Slovakia is very good at heavy industry and making weapons, which India wants to learn and build at home.

And what does “Comprehensive Partnership” mean? Think of friendship between countries as having levels. This is an upgrade — a promise to work together in many areas at once. (It is still one step below India’s top level, the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”)

The deal had four main parts:

1 · Defence
Instead of just buying weapons, the two will make them together — mainly big guns (artillery) and armoured vehicles.
2 · Jobs for Indians
A pact for safe, legal jobs for skilled Indians in Slovakia, plus a deal to protect their savings (see below).
3 · New Technology
Working together on future tech — quantum communication and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
4 · Trade
Slovakia will help India quickly start the big India–EU trade deal (FTA).

One idea you must know — a “Social Security Agreement (SSA).” When an Indian works abroad, money is often cut from the salary for pension and welfare funds. Without a deal, the worker pays this in both countries — and usually cannot get it back on returning home. An SSA solves this: it stops the double cut and lets the worker carry the savings back to India. That is why such deals are a big win for our workers going abroad.

  • Defence — the real aim. Making guns and armoured vehicles together supports “Make in India.” Slovak companies could even set up inside India’s special Defence Industrial Corridors (in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu).
  • Trade — the EU gateway. The India–EU FTA (a deal to cut taxes on trade between India and Europe) is the big prize. Slovakia promised to help start it soon, opening European markets to Indian goods and startups.
  • A united stand on terrorism. Both countries condemned terrorism and remembered the Pahalgam attack (22 April 2025) in Jammu & Kashmir, calling for the world to act together.
  • Clean energy & science. They will jointly research clean nuclear and geothermal (heat-from-the-earth) energy, and connect their universities for shared research.
  • Way ahead. The promises must now turn into action — quickly starting the jobs and savings deals, and using Slovakia as India’s doorway deeper into Europe.

  • Statement 1 — Correct: Bratislava is Slovakia’s capital, and Slovakia is a member of the EU.
  • Statement 2 — Correct: This was the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia.
  • Statement 3 — Incorrect (the trap): An SSA is about workers’ welfare — it protects their pension and social savings and prevents double payment. It has nothing to do with making weapons.
