Assam Chief Minister inaugurated a ₹55-crore green Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) block manufacturing plant in Tinsukia. Established by Litebricks Pvt. Ltd., the facility will use sediments from the Brahmaputra River as raw material for producing construction blocks.

Key Features of the Project

  • The plant aims to convert river sediments into an industrial resource while reducing dependence on conventional red bricks.
  • The use of alternative construction materials may reduce the demand for agricultural topsoil traditionally used in brick manufacturing, helping protect fertile agricultural land.
  • The extraction, processing and transportation of river sediments are expected to generate employment and business opportunities in Upper Assam.
  • The project was among the investments secured through Advantage Assam 2.0, which attracted investment commitments exceeding ₹5.18 lakh crore.

What Are Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) Blocks?

  • AAC blocks are lightweight, precast building materials made using cement, lime, sand or other suitable siliceous materials, water and an aerating agent.
  • They are cured under high-pressure steam in an autoclave, which gives them a porous structure.
  • Their key advantages include lower weight, thermal insulation, fire resistance and reduced structural load compared with conventional solid bricks.

Environmental and Economic Significance

  • The initiative promotes circular economy principles by converting an otherwise underutilised natural material into a value-added industrial product.
  • It can support sustainable construction, reduce pressure on agricultural soil and strengthen industrial development in Upper Assam.

However, river-sediment extraction must be scientifically regulated to prevent damage to river morphology, aquatic habitats and natural sediment movement.

Exam Hook: Key Takeaway

The project highlights the potential of resource-based green industrialisation in Assam by linking river-sediment utilisation, sustainable construction and regional employment.

One-line wrap: Assam’s AAC block plant seeks to turn Brahmaputra sediments into an industrial asset while reducing dependence on traditional red bricks.
