Why in news?
The Assam Government, in the Budget 2026–27, announced the launch of the Assam Tea and Golf Trail, an innovative tourism initiative aimed at promoting tea heritage, boosting high-value tourism and creating new livelihood opportunities.

Key Highlights

  • The Assam Tea and Golf Trail has been spearheaded by the Government of Assam as part of its strategy to diversify tourism and strengthen the tea economy.
  • The initiative aims to integrate Assam’s world-famous tea gardens with its historic golf courses, creating a unique heritage and experiential tourism circuit.
  • The project will operate through partnerships between tea estates, the tourism and hospitality sector, local communities and the State Government.
  • The primary objective is to promote high-value domestic and international tourism, generate rural employment and enhance Assam’s global tourism brand.

Major Features

  • The tourism circuit will showcase Assam’s rich tea heritage, colonial-era tea estates and scenic landscapes alongside championship golf courses.
  • Assam has three 18-hole championship golf courses and ten 9-hole golf courses, many of which are located within tea estates, offering a unique tourism experience.
  • The initiative is expected to encourage tea tourism, increase visitor spending and create additional income opportunities for tea-growing communities.

Support for the Tea Sector

  • Production subsidy for orthodox and speciality tea has been increased from ₹10 per kg to ₹15 per kg.
  • A new subsidy of ₹3 per kg has been introduced for export-oriented premium Assam CTC tea exported through recognised export channels.
  • Matcha tea has been included under the eligible category for subsidy to encourage value addition and product diversification.
  • The Government plans to provide land rights to 1.14 lakh tea garden families during the current financial year, with the long-term goal of securing land titles for all 3.5 lakh tea garden families.
  • Tea Labourers’ and Consumers’ Cooperative Societies will be promoted to strengthen the cooperative movement and improve workers’ participation in economic activities.

Why is it important?

  • Tea tourism diversifies Assam’s tourism sector beyond wildlife and nature tourism.
  • Value addition and export incentives improve farmers’ income and enhance India’s foreign exchange earnings.
  • Land rights for tea garden families promote social security, economic inclusion and sustainable rural development.
  • The initiative supports the objectives of the National Tourism Policy and the “Vocal for Local” vision by promoting indigenous products and heritage-based tourism.
