Key Highlights

  • The Government of Assam will pursue UNESCO recognition for the Vaishnavite Culture of Majuli, Bihu, and the Ahom capital of Rangpur–Sivasagar in a phased manner.
  • The initiative has been spearheaded by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, following the global recognition of the Charaideo Moidams as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The primary objective is to preserve Assam’s rich cultural heritage, strengthen its global identity, and promote sustainable heritage tourism.

  • The Monolithic Jars of Dima Hasao and the Rangpur–Sivasagar Historic Ensemble will be proposed for inclusion in UNESCO’s Tentative List, which is the first step towards World Heritage inscription.
  • The Hastividyarnava manuscript is proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register by 2027.
  • The Kathi-Ban Seng manuscript is proposed for inclusion in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register by 2029 to preserve Assam’s documentary and indigenous knowledge traditions.
