Context
Good Governance Day is observed on 25 December, the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to promote transparent, accountable and citizen-centric administration. On this day, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances releases the Good Governance Index.
What is the Good Governance Index?
- Launched in 2019 by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances.
- A composite index to assess governance performance of States and Union Territories.
- Based on 58 indicators across 10 sectors, including health, education, social welfare, public infrastructure, judiciary, environment and citizen-centric governance.
- States and Union Territories are grouped to ensure fair comparison.
Why It Matters
- Shifts focus from intent to measurable governance outcomes.
- Encourages competitive and cooperative federalism.
- Acts as a reform-trigger by identifying sector-wise gaps.
