The Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) in Bengaluru recently welcomed eight Black-capped Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) from South Africa.

  • This group, consisting of four males and four females, was imported from the Induna Primate and Parrot Park under a strategic International Animal Exchange Programme.

About the Species

  • Scientific Name: Sapajus apella (also known as the Tufted Capuchin).
  • Native Habitat: They are New World monkeys native to South America, specifically the Amazon Basin.
    • They thrive in diverse environments, from tropical rainforests to mangroves.
  • Characteristics: Known for their high intelligence, they are one of the few primate species observed using stone tools in the wild to crack open nuts.
  • Conservation Status: Categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List.

The Legal Framework for Import

The import of such exotic species into India is a complex process governed by multiple regulatory bodies to prevent zoonotic diseases and illegal trade:

  • Central Zoo Authority (CZA): The primary body that approves animal exchange between Indian and foreign zoos.
  • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972: While primarily protecting Indian wildlife, it provides the framework for the management of recognized zoos.
  • CITES Compliance: The exchange follows the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) guidelines, overseen in India by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB).
  • Health Protocols: The monkeys must undergo a mandatory quarantine period and obtain clearance from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS) under the Department of Animal Husbandry.

Currently, these “engineers of the forest” are in a designated quarantine facility at BBP for health monitoring before they are introduced to the public.

Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP)

  • Bannerghatta Biological Park is located near Bengaluru, Karnataka, at the foothills of the Bannerghatta National Park.
  • It was originally the part of Bannerghatta National Park
  • It was made independent in 2002 to promote wildlife conservation, education and scientific management of captive animals.
  • The park functions under the Karnataka Forest Department and is regulated by the Central Zoo Authority of India.
