Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated two landmark projects in Guwahati — the Gateway of Guwahati (Terminal & Jetty) and the Brahmaputra Riverfront – Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan in the presence of the Chief Minister. Together, these projects, built at a combined cost of ₹632 crore.

Gateway of Guwahati (Terminal & Jetty)

Project cost: ₹305 crore
Location: MG Road, Guwahati
Significance: The first all-weather floating terminal in the North East, heralding a new era of riverine passenger transport.

Key features:

  • Built-up area – 6,800 sqm; linkspan length – 172 m.
  • The terminal and jetty supported dolphin structures.
  • The 120-m pontoon can berth 4 catamaran vessels (100 passengers each).
  • World-class terminal with e-ticketing and command & control centre.
  • Flexible jetty height with fluctuating river levels up to 10.9 m.

Brahmaputra Riverfront – Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan

Project cost: ₹327 crore
Location: Uzan Bazar, Guwahati
Significance: A milestone in developing recreational and cultural spaces along the Brahmaputra riverfront.

Key features:

  • Developed stretch: 1.2 km (New DC Bungalow to Kachari Ghat).
  • 15-m-wide boulevard, landscaped paths, cycle tracks, and seating zones.
  • Open gymnasium, children’s play area, and four commercial amenity buildings.
  • Seven Assamese-themed entry gates and erosion-protection structures.

The Legacy of Sati Radhika:

  • Sati Radhika lived during medieval Assam, a period of socio-political upheaval and religious transformation. 
  • She belonged to the Kaivarta community and is remembered for her steadfast loyalty, selflessness, and spiritual purity.
  • According to oral tradition, during the time of Srimanta Sankardev, Radhika earned the title of Shantikanya (Daughter of Peace) after constructing an embankment to protect Barpeta from annual floods caused by the stream flowing from Tembuwani Jan. 

Significance

The projects exemplify Assam’s push for urban rejuvenation, tourism, and river-based mobility under national initiatives like Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti. They blend heritage, ecology, and smart infrastructure — reconnecting Guwahati to the Brahmaputra, the lifeline of Assam.
