Relevance: GS-III (Science & Technology) | Source: The Indian Express
The Context: India’s homegrown navigation system, NavIC, went offline after older satellites finished their lifespan and imported atomic clocks broke down. To restore our “desi GPS” and keep our military and smartphones independent, ISRO is launching an advanced new satellite: the NVS-03.
1. What is NavIC? (India’s Regional Shield)
- Regional Setup: While the US (GPS) and China (Beidou) built global networks, India created a dedicated 7-satellite constellation covering the Indian subcontinent and 1,500 km beyond its borders.
- Better for Terrain: US GPS signals hit India at an angle, making them struggle in deep valleys or thick forests. NavIC satellites sit directly overhead, offering superior accuracy for our local geography.
2. Why Did the System Crash?
- Imported Clock Failures: Navigation relies on ultra-precise atomic clocks. The imported clocks on several early Indian satellites failed, rendering them useless.
- Launch Setbacks: Replacement missions failed—one rocket’s heat shield refused to open, and a newer NVS satellite failed because its space engines broke down.
- Wasted Years: Government audits found a major planning gap: satellites were launched years before compatible mobile phone chips were ready, wasting precious years of their operational life.
3. The NVS-03 Upgrades
- Made-in-India Clocks: The new series ditches faulty imports for reliable, indigenously built atomic clocks with a longer 12-year lifespan.
- Smartphone Friendly (L1 Band): By adding the “L1” frequency—the global standard used by GPS—NavIC can now work seamlessly inside regular consumer smartphones and smartwatches.
Practice MCQ
Q. Consider the following statements regarding the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC):
- NavIC is designed as a global navigation system to directly compete with the United States’ GPS across all continents.
- The newer NVS-series satellites incorporate the L1 frequency band to improve compatibility with civilian smartphones and wearable devices.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 only (b) 2 only (c) Both 1 and 2 (d) Neither 1 nor 2
Answer: (b) 2 only
Hint: Statement 1 is incorrect because NavIC is strictly a regional system covering India and 1,500 km around it, not a global one. Statement 2 is correct; the L1 band makes NavIC compatible with regular consumer tech.
