The 11th Ayurveda Day was observed across Assam on 23 September 2026, with health-awareness programmes and free medical camps organised in several districts. On the occasion, Ayurvedic physician Dr Lakshya Handique received the Assam Ayurveda Ratna Award 2026 for his contribution to the development and promotion of Ayurveda in Assam.

The award ceremony was held in Guwahati and was organised by the Ayurvedic Medical Organisation in collaboration with the Hedgewar Smarak Samiti.

What is Ayurveda Day?

  • The Government of India has designated 23 September as Ayurveda Day every year through a notification issued in 2025. 
  • From its inception in 2016 until 2024, Ayurveda Day was celebrated on Dhanvantari Jayanti (Dhanteras), which changes every year based on the Hindu lunar calendar.
  • The theme for this year’s celebration – “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow.”
  • The fixed date aims to provide a consistent platform for promoting Ayurveda nationally and internationally. 
  • The date also coincides with the autumnal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal. 

Assam’s Ayurveda Outreach

The 2026 celebrations went beyond an award ceremony and focused on community-level health awareness.

  • Health-awareness programmes and free medical camps were conducted in districts including Kamrup, Nalbari, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao and Nagaon.
  • Ten individuals were felicitated for their contributions to Ayurveda and healthcare.
  • Discussions highlighted Ayurvedic treatment, yoga, diet and daily routines as components of preventive health.
