Assam has achieved 100% electrification of its Broad Gauge railway network, with the completion of electrification of the Lumding–Badarpur Hill section. The State now has its entire 2,589 Route Km Broad Gauge network under electric traction.

Key Highlights

  • The electrification work falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway, which is spearheading railway electrification projects across the region.
  • A crucial milestone was achieved in June 2026 with the energisation of the 132 kilovolt transmission line connecting Haflong Grid Sub-Station with the New Haflong Traction Sub-Station.
  • Earlier in 2026, three major sections were electrified: Rangiya–Murkongselek (558 km), Chaparmukh–Dibrugarh (571 km) and Badarpur–Silchar and Badarpur–Churaibari (315 km).
  • Electric traction eliminates the need to change locomotives between diesel and electric traction at relevant points, enabling smoother train operations.
  • Electrification can improve sectional capacity, operational flexibility and locomotive utilisation, while reducing the operating and maintenance costs associated with diesel locomotives.
  • Greater use of electric traction also reduces dependence on fossil fuels and supports more energy-efficient railway operations.

Why is it Important for Assam?

  • For a geographically diverse and strategically important State like Assam, railway electrification can strengthen regional connectivity, passenger mobility and freight movement.
  • Better railway efficiency can also support trade and movement between Assam and other parts of the Northeast.
  • The development is also relevant to India’s broader railway decarbonisation effort, where increasing electrification is intended to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Exam Hook – Prelims

With reference to railway electrification in Assam, consider the following statements:

  1. The entire Broad Gauge railway network in Assam has been electrified.
  2. The Lumding–Badarpur Hill section was the final major section required for achieving complete electrification in the State.
  3. Railway electrification can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and improve locomotive utilisation.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

(a) 1 and 2 only
(b) 2 and 3 only
(c) 1 and 3 only
(d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (d) 1, 2 and 3

One-line Wrap: Assam’s 100% railway electrification marks an important infrastructure milestone, improving operational efficiency while supporting cleaner and more reliable rail connectivity across the Northeast.
