Why in the News?

Professor Maheswar Neog (1915–1995), one of Assam’s foremost Indologists, cultural historians and scholars, is remembered for his extensive study of Assamese history, literature, religion, music, dance, drama and visual traditions. Born on 7 September 1915 in Kamarfadia, Sivasagar, his scholarship remains important for understanding how Assamese identity evolved through cultural traditions, particularly the Vaishnavite movement of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Who was Maheswar Neog?

Neog was not merely a historian of Assam. He approached Assam as a living cultural civilisation, studying the connections between its people, language, religion, literature, performing arts and social traditions.

His intellectual approach was strongly humanistic and comparative. Instead of looking at culture only through kings, battles and political boundaries, he examined how ordinary practices, beliefs, artistic expressions and community institutions shaped collective life.

• He studied history, literature, folklore, language, religion, fine arts, music, dance, drama, painting, epigraphy and ethnography, making his scholarship exceptionally interdisciplinary. Gauhati University’s academic material describes this broad approach as “Assamology.”

Maheswar Neog and Assamese Identity

A central concern of Neog’s scholarship was the question: How did Assamese society develop a distinctive cultural identity?

For Neog, identity was not simply based on language or territory. It emerged through the interaction of shared values, traditions, institutions and cultural memory.

His study of the Vaishnavite movement led by Srimanta Sankardeva was particularly significant. He examined how the movement influenced literature, music, theatre, dance, painting, religious practices and community institutions in Assam.

His major work, Early History of the Vaishnava Faith and Movement in Assam: Sankardeva and His Times, first published in 1965, was based on his doctoral research and remains an important study of the history and spread of the Vaishnavite movement in Assam.

Beyond Religion: Culture as a Unifying Force

Neog’s contribution was much wider than the study of Vaishnavism.

• His writings examined Borgeet, Bhaona, Assamese theatre, Sattriya dance, paintings and other artistic traditions, showing how religion and artistic expression developed together in Assam. His work Aesthetic Continuum brings together studies on Assamese music, drama, dance and painting.
• His studies of tradition and style explored the relationship between Assamese cultural practices and wider Indian artistic traditions.
• His scholarship therefore helps explain how religious movements can become wider cultural movements, influencing language, literature, performing arts and social institutions.

Neog and the Idea of Cultural Pluralism

Neog’s approach is particularly relevant to understanding the Northeast’s cultural diversity.

He did not view Assamese culture as a fixed or isolated entity. Instead, he examined cultural evolution through interaction, adaptation and exchange among different communities and traditions.

This provides an important perspective for understanding Indian unity in diversity: regional identities need not necessarily weaken national identity; they can become part of a larger and plural Indian cultural framework.
