1 · Context

We often take nature for granted because it doesn’t have a price tag. To change this, researchers from Bengaluru (ISEC) recently calculated the exact economic value of the Pichavaram Mangrove forest in Tamil Nadu. They found that the total value of this forest is a massive ₹2,485 crore (or ₹1.83 crore per hectare).

Mangroves are not just trees in mud; they are natural shields against tsunamis, homes for fish, and giant sponges that soak up dangerous carbon pollution (called “Blue Carbon”). By putting a strict rupee value on these services, the government can prove that destroying mangroves for coastal building projects causes real, measurable financial loss to the country.

2 · Understanding the Value

Step 1: The Valuation Gap
Normally, builders destroy mangroves because their benefits (like stopping cyclones or cleaning water) don’t show up on financial balance sheets.
Step 2: Finding the Hidden Carbon
The study found that the actual mud and soil beneath the mangroves holds much more captured carbon pollution than the visible trees above ground.
Step 3: Calculating the Rupee Value
By calculating how much carbon is locked away, researchers proved that Pichavaram’s “Blue Carbon” asset alone is worth an incredible ₹1,612 crore.
Step 4: Smart Policy Decisions
With this data, the government can now charge companies money for destroying mangroves or pay local villagers to protect them (Payment for Ecosystem Services).

3 · Key Ecological Concepts

Blue Carbon
Ocean Sponges
The carbon pollution captured by coastal ecosystems (mangroves, seagrass). They soak up carbon up to ten times faster than regular land forests.
Pichavaram Mangroves
Tamil Nadu’s Shield
Located in Tamil Nadu between two river estuaries. It is one of the largest mangrove forests in India and acts as a massive natural shield against cyclones.
MISHTI Scheme (2023)
Government Action
A specific government scheme aimed at actively planting more mangroves along India’s coastline to boost incomes and protect shores.
Payment for Ecosystem Services
Rewarding Protection
A financial system where people or villages are paid money specifically to manage and protect nature, rather than cutting it down.

UPSC Prelims Quick Facts: Geography & Value
Ramsar Site Pichavaram was officially declared a Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar Site) in 2022, legally recognizing its immense ecological value globally.
Mangroves Mangroves are a diverse group of salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that grow in the intertidal zones of tropical and subtropical coastlines.
Total Economic Value (TEV) This calculation proves that protecting a forest is financially more profitable for a nation than destroying it for immediate infrastructure gains.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to mangrove ecosystems and carbon sequestration, consider the following statements:

  1. “Blue Carbon” refers exclusively to the carbon captured and stored in the above-ground woody biomass of mature tropical land forests.
  2. In a typical mangrove ecosystem, the underlying soil and sediments store a substantially larger portion of the total carbon compared to the visible vegetation.
  3. The Pichavaram mangroves in Tamil Nadu were declared a Ramsar Site of International Importance in 2022.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Incorrect (the trap): Blue Carbon refers specifically to the carbon captured by coastal and marine ecosystems (like mangroves and seagrass), not inland tropical land forests.
  • Statement 2 — Correct: The vast majority of a mangrove’s carbon storage (the massive “Blue Carbon” asset) is locked deep within its waterlogged soil and sediments.
  • Statement 3 — Correct: Pichavaram received its Ramsar tag in 2022, highlighting its critical role as a coastal bio-shield.
