1 · Context

For years, the world’s biggest climate goal (from the Paris Agreement) was to stop global temperatures from rising past 1.5°C. Unfortunately, a new UN report confirms that we are going to fail this goal. We will cross the 1.5°C limit very soon.
Because stopping it is now impossible, the UN has introduced a survival plan called “Overshoot, Peak, and Decline.”

2 · The New Survival Strategy

Step 1: The Inevitable Overshoot
We have to accept that temperatures will cross the safe 1.5°C mark. Current policies actually put us on a path to a dangerous 2.6°C by 2100.
Step 2: Holding the Peak
The world must urgently cut emissions now to ensure the temperature doesn’t go too high during this temporary “overshoot” phase.
Step 3: The Danger Zone
While we are above 1.5°C, we will face extreme heat, melting glaciers, dropping food production, and dying coral reefs.
Step 4: The Great Decline
To cool the Earth back down by the year 2100, we must launch massive “Nature-Based” projects, like huge forest-planting drives, to physically suck carbon out of the air.

3 · Key Climate Concepts

Tipping Points
The Point of No Return
When nature gets so damaged (like the Amazon rainforest burning) that it can never heal itself, causing permanent, deadly changes to the whole planet.
Nature-Based Removals
Trees as Vacuums
Just stopping pollution isn’t enough anymore. We now have to actively use nature, like massive forests, to suck the existing carbon pollution out of the air.
Adaptation Gap
The Missing Shield
The gap between what a country *needs* to do to survive climate change (like building sea walls) and what they have actually built so far.
US Withdrawal
The Global Setback
The United States has formally exited all major global climate agreements. As the world’s biggest historical polluter, their exit makes fixing the planet much harder.

Prelims Quick Facts: Agreements & Risks
Paris Agreement (2015) The global treaty where all countries agreed to try and stop temperatures from rising past 1.5°C.
COP30 Consensus Held in Brazil, this was the first UN meeting where leaders officially admitted that crossing the 1.5°C line is likely to happen.
Food Security Risk If we don’t adapt quickly, the extra heat could cause global food production to drop drastically by 14% by the year 2050.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) IPCC is the official UN body responsible for assessing the science related to climate change. It was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to global climate strategy and the “Overshoot, Peak, and Decline” pathway, consider the following statements:

  1. The strategy acknowledges that breaching the 1.5°C global warming limit is inevitable in the near future.
  2. The ‘decline’ phase of the pathway relies exclusively on cutting industrial emissions to zero, without the need for carbon removal technologies.
  3. The United States recently finalized its formal exit from the Paris Agreement and the UNFCCC.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 1 and 3 only    (c) 2 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 1 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Correct: The UN now openly accepts that the 1.5°C threshold will be temporarily breached.
  • Statement 2 — Incorrect: Emission cuts are no longer enough. The decline phase requires a massive scaling up of carbon removal strategies, like huge forest-planting programs.
  • Statement 3 — Correct: The US recently formally exited major global climate platforms, severely complicating global efforts.
