The Northeast India Space Workshop 2026 concluded with a focus on using the region’s geography, human capital and institutions to build a new space economy capable of solving regional problems and creating products for national and global markets.

The two-day workshop was organised by the Space Industry Association of India in partnership with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre under the theme “Leveraging Space Technology: Regional Transformation to Global Reach.”

Key areas identified for space-based solutions

The workshop highlighted that regional challenges can become innovation opportunities when government requirements are converted into clearly defined problems for startups, researchers and industry.

• Floods and landslides can be addressed through satellite observations, ground sensors, weather information and AI-based early-warning systems.
• Agriculture and water resources can benefit from remote sensing for crop, soil and water monitoring.
• Forests and biodiversity can be monitored using geospatial technologies to detect changes and support conservation.
• Border management, connectivity and infrastructure planning can use satellite imagery and geographic information systems for better decision-making.

The emphasis was on moving beyond merely monitoring disasters towards real-time intelligence and actionable early warning.

Centre for Space Entrepreneurship in Assam

A major outcome was the proposed Centre for Space Entrepreneurship in Assam, being taken forward by the Space Industry Association of India, Software Technology Parks of India and the Government of Assam.

The proposed centre aims to:

• Connect startups, innovators, academia and industry with mentorship, technical expertise and market opportunities.
• Strengthen linkages with the Centre of Excellence in Space Technology in Bengaluru.
• Help convert research into prototypes, field-tested solutions, enterprises and marketable products.
• Create opportunities for Northeast-based talent to develop solutions for regional challenges instead of migrating entirely to established technology hubs.

Human capital and research

The workshop stressed industry-ready education, longer internships, interdisciplinary learning and application-oriented research. Shared technical infrastructure and greater industry participation can help bridge the gap between laboratory research and commercial applications.
