1 · Context

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. It hides until it is too late and easily resists normal chemotherapy. For years, scientists struggled to block a specific protein (GIPC1) that helps these tumors grow, simply because the protein has a flat, slippery shape that normal drugs cannot stick to.

Enter Sravathi AI, a Bengaluru-based startup, which teamed up with America’s famous Mayo Clinic. Instead of doing years of trial-and-error in a lab, they used advanced Artificial Intelligence to scan thousands of chemicals and design a custom drug in just 5 months. This is an example of how India’s deep-tech startups are solving global health crises, perfectly matching the goals of the national IndiaAI Mission.

2 · The AI Drug Discovery Process

Step 1: The Deadly Disease
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is highly aggressive. Less than 13% of patients survive beyond five years because the tumor fights off chemotherapy.
Step 2: The Slippery Protein
A protein called GIPC1 tells the tumor to grow fast. Scientists couldn’t block it because its surface is too flat and shallow for normal medicines to grab onto.
Step 3: AI to the Rescue
Using AI software, scientists scanned 40,000 compounds and engineered a brand new molecular “key” designed specifically to lock onto this slippery protein.
Step 4: Record Speed Success
What takes years in traditional labs was done in just 5 months! The new AI-designed drug successfully slowed down tumor growth in early lab tests.

3 · Key Scientific Concepts

Generative AI in Pharma
Designing Medicines
Instead of testing random chemicals in a lab over many years, AI software acts like an architect, building new molecular structures from scratch to fight diseases.
GIPC1 Protein
The Tumor’s Helper
While it doesn’t start the cancer, this protein is hijacked by pancreatic cancer cells to grow and spread aggressively across the body.
The PDZ Domain
The Slippery Surface
This is the active part of the GIPC1 protein. It is so flat, broad, and shallow that standard medicines simply slide right off it.
Small-Molecule Inhibitor
The AI Drug
A microscopic, custom-built chemical designed perfectly by AI to bind to the slippery protein and stop it from sending dangerous cancer-growth signals.

Prelims Quick Facts: Indian Institutions
IndiaAI Mission The government has allotted over ₹10,300 crore to build powerful AI supercomputers, helping Indian startups solve global problems like cancer.
BIRAC’s Role The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (under the Dept. of Biotechnology) helps fund and support innovative Indian biotech startups.
National Cancer Grid A massive network of cancer hospitals across India, funded by the Dept. of Atomic Energy, to provide standard, high-quality cancer care to everyone.
CDSCO Challenge India’s main drug regulator (CDSCO) now faces a new challenge: how to quickly but safely test and approve these new, fast-tracked AI-made drugs for human use.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to AI in medicine and related institutions in India, consider the following statements:

  1. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is generally known for its high survival rate and easy early detection.
  2. The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) operates as a not-for-profit company under the Department of Biotechnology.
  3. The IndiaAI Mission aims to establish sovereign AI computing infrastructure within the country.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Incorrect: PDAC is highly aggressive, famously difficult to detect early, and has a very low five-year survival rate (below 13%).
  • Statement 2 — Correct: BIRAC was set up by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to strengthen emerging biotech enterprises in India.
  • Statement 3 — Correct: The IndiaAI Mission is a flagship government initiative to build strong, independent computing power and make India a leader in AI deep-tech.
