1 · Context

The government recently approved a massive ₹23,731 crore to revamp the GOBARdhan scheme until 2036. The goal is brilliant: turn rural agricultural waste (like cow dung and stubble) into Compressed Biogas (CBG) to run our cars and kitchens.
The money is ready, but the real headache is logistics. Collecting millions of tonnes of waste from scattered villages, storing it safely without it rotting or catching fire, and transporting it to gas plants is incredibly difficult. Understanding this “supply chain” challenge is vital. If we cannot easily collect the waste, even the best biogas plants will sit empty.

2 · The Raw Material Problem

Step 1: The ‘Parali’ Rush
Paddy and wheat stubble give great gas output. But farmers burn it quickly. Collecting it in just 15 days and storing dry bales all year poses huge fire risks.
Step 2: Sugarcane Waste Spoils Fast
‘Press mud’ from sugar mills is excellent for biogas but rots quickly. Also, sugar mills only run for 4-5 months, making year-round gas production tricky.
Step 3: Heavy Cow Dung
Cow dung gives less gas (only 6%) and is very heavy. Moving it across long distances burns so much diesel truck fuel that it ruins the “green energy” logic.
Step 4: The ‘Aggregator’ Solution
To fix this, middlemen (aggregators) collect waste from a tight 25km radius. They also give the leftover organic manure back to the farmers as a reward.
