1 · Context
| Over the past five years, India has installed over 2.5 million solar pumps under the PM-KUSUM scheme, successfully helping farmers move away from expensive and polluting diesel. However, a major environmental dilemma has emerged. Since solar energy is practically free after the panels are installed, experts fear farmers will have no reason to switch off their pumps, leading to the reckless extraction of groundwater. But by allowing farmers to sell extra solar electricity back to the grid for cash, they become “prosumers” who actively save water to earn more money, rather than pumping it endlessly. |
