Why in the News?

Recurring floods and severe riverbank erosion in Assam, particularly in Upper Assam, have highlighted the need for a long-term, scientific and basin-based approach to disaster management. Recent flooding in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat showed that even traditionally less flood-prone areas can now face severe inundation.

While floods cause temporary damage, riverbank erosion permanently removes land, displaces communities and threatens settlements, agriculture and cultural heritage.

Why Is Assam Highly Vulnerable?

Assam’s vulnerability is linked to its fragile river systems, heavy monsoon rainfall, high sediment load and changing river channels.

  • The 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake significantly altered the Brahmaputra river system and increased sediment deposition and instability in several river channels.

  • Early warning systems, automatic rainfall and river-level monitoring, and community-based evacuation mechanisms should be strengthened.
