1 · What is the issue?

The Himalayan mountains are breathtaking, but they are burning at an alarming rate. Even though the Himalayas make up only 17% of India’s land, they suffer a shocking 57% of all forest fires in the country.
A recent Parliamentary Committee pointed out severe flaws in how we manage these disasters. Right now, we depend on foreign satellites that only check on India a few times a day, giving out too many “false alarms.” To save our fragile forests, the panel strongly recommends launching our own 24×7 ISRO satellite, creating dedicated rescue teams, and creating smart policies to clear flammable dry leaves from the forest floor.

2 · The Problem with How We Track Fires

Step 1: The Geography Trap
Fires happen for different reasons. In the West (Uttarakhand), dry pine needles catch fire easily. In the East (Northeast India), traditional ‘slash and burn’ farming causes fires.
Step 2: The Blind Spots in the Sky
India uses foreign “polar-orbiting” satellites. They only pass over India about 8 times a day, leaving huge time gaps where dangerous fires go completely unnoticed.
Step 3: Alert Fatigue (False Alarms)
The current satellites send too many wrong alerts. In Uttarakhand, only 12.5% of alerts were actual fires. Forest guards get tired of chasing fake alerts and may ignore real ones.
