About the Shakti Peethas
- Shakti Peethas are sacred pilgrimage sites dedicated to Goddess Sati (Shakti).
- According to Hindu tradition, these sites mark the places where the body parts or ornaments of Goddess Sati fell after Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember her body while Lord Shiva carried it in grief.
- There are 51 Shakti Peethas spread across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Tibet (China), of which 18 are regarded as Maha Shakti Peethas.
- Important Shakti Peethas outside India include Guhyeshwari (Nepal), Kottari Devi (Pakistan), Indrakshi (Sri Lanka), Dakshayani Devi (Tibet, China) and Maa Bhabani (Bangladesh).
