Why in the News?
The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and the Government of Assam have launched Mission Senehjori, a ₹411-crore initiative to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain.
What is Mission Senehjori?
- Mission Senehjori is a three-year flagship initiative (2026–2028) aimed at strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain.
- The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, in convergence with the Government of Assam, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Defence Research and Development Organisation and other agencies.
- The Mission has an estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore, including support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Key Objectives
- To strengthen the entire value chain from host plant cultivation to global marketing and exports.
- To increase income and value realisation for Muga silk rearers and weavers.
- To improve the livelihoods of more than 2.5 lakh weavers, rearers and entrepreneurs associated with Assam’s iconic golden silk
- To promote branding, traceability, quality assurance and export competitiveness.
- To preserve Assam’s unique silk heritage while creating sustainable livelihoods.
Key Features
- The Mission follows a cluster-based approach covering major Muga-producing districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Majuli, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sualkuchi.
- It will establish five modern Muga reeling units in Jorhat, Sivasagar, Sualkuchi, Majuli, & Lakhimpur and one Muga spun silk mill in Dhemaji district to process silk waste and generate additional income..
- It will promote Farmer Producer Organisations, Common Facility Centres and digital traceability systems.
- It will strengthen GI authentication, branding and export promotion under the unified brand “Senehjori”.
- It will also develop a Muga Silk Trail, Silk Tourism Park and Muga Utsav to promote cultural tourism.
Major Features
- The mission covers major Muga-producing districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sualkuchi.
- It will establish five modern reeling units and a Muga Spun Silk Mill.
- It aims to create 30 Farmer Producer Organisations and over 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups.
- Around 5,000 hectares of Som and Soalu host plants will be regenerated.
- More than 80% of traded Muga silk will be authenticated through GI-linked digital traceability systems.
- The mission also proposes a Muga Silk Trail, Silk Tourism Park and annual Muga Utsav festivals.
Why Muga Silk is Special
- Muga silk is known as the world’s only naturally golden silk.
- Assam produces nearly 90% of the world’s Muga silk.
- It received the Geographical Indication tag in 2007, becoming India’s first GI-tagged silk.
- It is renowned for its natural golden sheen, durability and cultural significance.

- The mission aligns with the broader Ashtalakshmi Development Vision of promoting the unique strengths of the Northeastern States.
- It can enhance exports, generate rural employment, empower women artisans and strengthen Assam’s cultural economy.
- It demonstrates how traditional knowledge and modern value chains can work together for inclusive growth.
