1. What is the News?

We buy “bottled water” every day, often calling it all “mineral water.” However, scientifically and legally, there is a massive difference between natural mineral water, regular packaged water, and tap water. UPSC frequently tests the basic science behind these everyday items.

2. How is Natural Mineral Water Formed?

Natural mineral water is not made in a factory; it is created by geology.

  • The Journey: Rainwater slowly seeps deep into the ground, filtering through layers of rocks like limestone or granite.
  • The Magic: As it travels, the water naturally dissolves essential minerals (like calcium and magnesium) from these rocks.
  • The Source: It collects in deep, protected underground reservoirs called aquifers. Because this natural filtration takes decades, the water is naturally pure and rich in trace elements.

3. Understanding Different Types of Water

Water Type Source & Process Key Characteristics for Exam
Natural Mineral Water Drawn directly from underground aquifers. Cannot be chemically treated (no chlorine). Only physical filters or UV light can be used to keep its natural minerals intact.
Packaged Drinking Water Standard bottled water (like normal Aquafina/Kinley). It is just municipal or groundwater heavily purified using Reverse Osmosis (RO), with artificial minerals added back later.
Distilled Water Water boiled into steam and cooled back to liquid. Pure H2O. It leaves all minerals behind. It is not advised for daily drinking because our bodies need those dissolved minerals.
Municipal Tap Water River, lake, or borewell water. Highly processed. Because it has surface bacteria, it is aggressively disinfected using chlorine.

4. Hard Water vs. Soft Water

  • Hard Water: Contains high amounts of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It tastes slightly chalky, leaves white stains on taps, and stops soap from forming foam easily.
    • Geography: Groundwater in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and the Delhi/NCR region is naturally very hard due to the local geology.
  • Soft Water: Has very low mineral content. Found in Himalayan rivers or high-rainfall areas like Kerala.

5. Who Makes the Rules?

In India, drinking water is strictly regulated to ensure public health.

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are the main regulators.
  • Natural mineral water strictly cannot be chemically altered by producers.

The “UPSC Trap”

  • The “Chemical Purification” Trap: UPSC will try to trick you by stating that Natural Mineral Water undergoes heavy chemical purification like chlorination to make it safe. Incorrect. Legally, natural mineral water cannot be chemically treated; it must be bottled at the source using only physical filtration/UV.
  • The “Distilled Health” Trap: A statement might say distilled water is the healthiest because it is 100% pure. Incorrect. While pure, it lacks essential dietary minerals (like calcium and magnesium) required for human health.

UPSC Value Box

Key Concept / Body Simple Meaning for Exam
Hardness of Water The measure of dissolved minerals (specifically calcium and magnesium) in water. It prevents soap from lathering.
FSSAI The central authority established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare that regulates food and beverage safety standards in India.

With reference to the science and regulations of drinking water in India, consider the following statements:

  1. The hardness of water is primarily caused by the presence of dissolved calcium and magnesium.
  2. Under Indian regulations, ‘Natural Mineral Water’ must be heavily treated with chlorine to ensure it is completely free from pathogens before bottling.
  3. Distilled water is generally not recommended for regular human consumption because it lacks essential natural minerals.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

(a) 1 and 2 only

(b) 1 and 3 only

(c) 3 only

(d) 1, 2 and 3

Correct Answer: (b)
