Assam is preparing to join the global dark sky movement by proposing certified Dark Sky Parks/Reserves to curb light pollution, promote astro-tourism, and safeguard nocturnal biodiversity.

  • The initiative has received in-principle Cabinet approval, with Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, and Dima Hasao emerging as leading candidates.
  • The initiative will involve coordination among forest, tourism, rural development and power departments, along with collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.

What is a Dark Sky Park?

A Dark Sky Park is a protected area where artificial lighting is strictly regulated to preserve natural night conditions.

  • Objective: Promote astronomy
  • Certification: Granted by DarkSky International.
  • Key features include:
    • Use of shielded, downward-focused lighting.
    • Low radiance and minimal artificial illumination.
    • Protection of wildlife sensitive to night-time light.
    • Promotion of astronomy and eco-tourism.
  • Globally, there are over 240 such sites.

Other Such Facilities in India

  • India’s first Dark Sky Park: Pench Tiger Reserve (Maharashtra), which is also Asia’s fifth official Dark Sky Park.
  • India’s first dark-sky preserve: Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), a high-altitude astronomy station situated in Hanle and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
    • Positioned in the Western Himalayas at an elevation of 4,500 meters (14,764 ft), the IAO ranks among the world’s highest sites for optical, infrared, and gamma-ray telescopes.
