Vikram-1: India’s First Private Orbital Rocket Gets Ready

1 · What exactly is happening?

Skyroot Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based space startup, is ready to launch its first orbital rocket, Vikram-1. The launch window is set between 12 July and 4 August 2026 from Sriharikota.

Named Mission Aagaman (which means ‘The Arrival’), this will be India’s first privately built rocket attempting to reach and stay in orbit. You might remember their Vikram-S flight back in 2022 (Mission Prarambh). That was a sub-orbital flight—it just touched space and fell back. Vikram-1, however, is built to stay there.

2 · Sub-orbital vs. Orbital: What’s the big deal?

The core difference: A sub-orbital rocket just crosses the Kármán line (the 100 km edge of space) but doesn’t have the sideways speed to stay up, so it falls back to Earth. An orbital rocket, on the other hand, hits massive speeds (around 28,000 km/h) to keep “falling around” the Earth. This speed allows it to park satellites in space.
The Mission
A first for private India
This test flight aims to reach a 450 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at a 60-degree angle, carrying a mix of domestic and foreign payloads.
The Machine
100% Made in India
It is a seven-storey carbon composite rocket. It uses solid Kalam engines for the main push and a 3D-printed liquid Raman engine to place satellites perfectly.
The Objective
Data is the real prize
The main goal isn’t just a show; it’s to gather real flight data on how the engines and navigation systems behave in actual space conditions.
The Big Picture
Grabbing a global share
India currently holds only ~2% of the global space market. We need successful private rockets to grab a bigger piece of the booming small-satellite business.
  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO): Any orbit below 2,000 km. It requires less fuel to reach and is perfect for communication and earth-observation satellites.
  • Don’t get confused: IN-SPACe is the government agency that regulates and promotes private space startups. NSIL (NewSpace India Limited) is purely the business arm that sells ISRO’s services.
  • The Policy Shift: The Indian Space Policy 2023 officially opened the doors for private companies to launch rockets.
  • Why ISRO loves this: If private companies can handle routine satellite launches, ISRO can free up its scientists and budget for massive projects like Gaganyaan (human spaceflight) and Chandrayaan.
UPSC Prelims Quick Facts

Vikram-S (2022) Mission Prarambh. India’s first private rocket to reach space (sub-orbital).
Kármán line The globally recognised boundary of space, roughly 100 km above sea level.
IN-SPACe The single-window nodal agency under the Dept of Space that regulates private space activities.
NSIL NewSpace India Limited. ISRO’s commercial and marketing arm.
MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to India’s space sector, consider the following statements:

  1. Vikram-S (Mission Prarambh, 2022) was a sub-orbital flight and the first privately built Indian rocket to reach space.
  2. Low Earth Orbit refers to an orbit at an altitude of 2,000 km or less.
  3. IN-SPACe is the commercial arm of the Department of Space that markets ISRO’s technologies and launch services.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (a) 1 and 2 only

  • Statement 1 — Correct: Vikram-S was indeed a sub-orbital flight and India’s first private rocket to reach space.
  • Statement 2 — Correct: Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is defined as an altitude of 2,000 km or below.
  • Statement 3 — Incorrect: Beware the trap! The commercial marketing arm is NSIL. IN-SPACe is the regulatory and promotional body for private space companies.
