1 · What is the core issue?
| Recently, sudden and severe floods in Assam and Nagaland were blamed on “cloudbursts.” A cloudburst is exactly what it sounds like – it’s as if a giant water balloon bursts in the sky, dumping massive amounts of water in one small area very quickly, causing instant flash floods.
While global warming is making these events more common, there is a catch. Sometimes, authorities use the word “cloudburst” as an excuse. By calling it an unpredictable natural disaster, they hide the real reasons for the destruction: illegal buildings blocking rivers, cut-down forests, and poor city drainage. |
2 · How a Cloudburst Forms (Step-by-Step Flow)

Step 1: The Upward Push
Warm, moist air rises rapidly. In hilly areas, the steep mountain slopes force these monsoon winds upwards very fast (called Orographic Lifting). |

Step 2: Giant Clouds Build
As the moist air goes up, it cools and forms massive, towering clouds called Cumulonimbus clouds, reaching up to 15 km high! |

Step 3: The Suspension
Strong currents of warm air (updrafts) push up from the ground, keeping heavy water droplets trapped up inside the cloud, preventing normal rain. |

Step 4: The Burst
Finally, the water becomes too heavy. The updraft fails, and all the trapped water crashes down to the earth at once, like a falling wall of water. |
3 · Key Geographical Concepts

The Official Definition

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) strictly defines a cloudburst as when a small area (20-30 sq. km) gets 100 mm (10 cm) of rain in just one hour.

Radar Blind Spots
Mountains Block the View
Doppler Radars send out beams to “see” rain. In the Himalayas, steep mountains literally block these radar beams, making it very hard to see a cloudburst forming.

Rapid Development
No Time to Warn
Unlike cyclones which can be tracked for a week, a cloudburst forms and falls incredibly fast, giving scientists almost zero time to warn people.

The Blame Game
Hiding Human Errors
Calling every flood a “cloudburst” is a convenient excuse for officials. Often, the rainfall wasn’t a cloudburst at all; the flood happened because of poor city planning and blocked drains.
