The restoration of several traditional Dong irrigation channels in Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region has revived agriculture, improved water security, and benefited thousands of rural households.
What is the Traditional Dong Irrigation System?
- The Dong Irrigation System is a centuries-old indigenous water management practice developed by the Bodo community of Assam.
- It operates in the foothill regions of the Bhutan Himalayas, particularly in Udalguri, Baksa, Chirang and Kokrajhar districts.
- The system uses gravity-fed earthen canals to divert water from rivers, streams and wetlands to agricultural fields and villages without requiring electricity or pumps.
How Does It Work?
- Main canals (Dongs) carry water from perennial rivers and streams.
- Diversion bunds, made of bamboo, stones, logs and earth, redirect water into canals.
- Water flows naturally through gravity, making it a low-cost and sustainable irrigation system.
- A network of smaller channels distributes water to farms, livestock and household ponds.
Why is it Important?
- It supports cultivation of paddy, maize, mustard, vegetables and horticultural crops.
- It enhances food security and reduces vulnerability to drought.
- It represents an excellent example of traditional ecological knowledge and community-based resource management.
- It aligns with the principles of sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient water management.
Recent Restoration Initiative
- The restoration project was spearheaded by Aaranyak with support from LIC Housing Finance Limited.
- Technical guidance was provided by Partha Jyoti Das.
- Around 20 km of Dong networks across 11 villages were restored.
- The initiative benefited approximately 1,452 households, irrigated nearly 7,000 bighas of farmland, and improved the lives of around 7,500 people.
