The News: For the first time in over 100 years, scientists have officially discovered a brand-new living cat species. Found hiding in the cloudy mountain forests of Bolivia, the tiny Leopardus tilcayo proves how much hidden wildlife still exists on Earth.

1. Know the Tilcayo

This rare cat is incredibly small and perfectly built for living in high mountain forests.

  • Smaller Than a House Cat: The Tilcayo weighs just 1.4 kg (about 3 pounds) and measures 18 inches long. It has light brown fur covered in beautiful, irregular dark spots.
  • A Unique Cloud Forest Home: It lives only in Bolivia’s “Yungas”—a highly humid, mountainous forest region that is constantly covered in thick clouds.
  • Nighttime Hunters: Rare camera-trap photos show these tiny cats are active at night, silently hunting small forest mice and rodents.

2. How Was It Hidden for So Long?

It took a century to find this cat because it looked exactly like other South American wild cats to the naked eye.

  • The “Cryptic” Mystery: For decades, scientists thought all South American “tiger cats” were just one widespread species because they all looked identical.
  • The DNA Truth: By testing DNA from 38 cats (including old skins preserved in museums), researchers proved that tiger cats are actually five completely different species.
  • An Ancient Split: The genetic data shows the Tilcayo naturally separated from the other wild cats over a million years ago, evolving on its own in the mountains.
