1 · The Core Issue
| Western Europe is currently sweating through a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 40°C in France, Spain, and Italy. Sadly, France has seen over 40 heat-related deaths, and recently recorded its hottest day since 1947.
Scientists say this intense heat is caused by a rare weather pattern known as an Omega Block. Unfortunately, climate change is acting like a magnifying glass, making this pattern even more dangerous. |
2 · What is an Omega Block?
| Think of an Omega Block as a giant traffic jam in the sky. A dome of warm, high-pressure air gets stuck between two pockets of cool, low-pressure air on its left and right. On a weather map, this bulge looks exactly like the Greek letter Omega (Ω). While these usually last 3 to 10 days, they can stubbornly stick around for weeks. |
|
The Setup
Wind Rivers Get Stuck
The jet stream (fast winds high up that normally push weather from west to east) bends sharply and weakens. This locks the weather systems tightly in one place.
|
The Mechanism
A Baking Oven
Inside the high-pressure centre, air gets pushed down (a process called subsidence). As it sinks, it heats up and stops clouds from forming. Clear skies plus trapped warm air creates a heat dome.
|
|
The Multiplier
The Climate Factor
Our planet is already about 1.3°C warmer than in the past. Because of this extra background heat, the trapped air in these blocks gets 2 to 4°C hotter than it naturally would.

India’s Tools
How India Fights Back
Inspired by Ahmedabad’s 2013 Heat Action Plan, India is taking action. Cities are painting roofs white to reflect heat, setting up water stations, and changing outdoor work hours.
|
- Rain on the Edges: While the centre bakes, the cooler low-pressure systems on the sides bring rain. For example, southern Britain might be boiling while its northern half gets rainy and cool.
- Why India Should Care: Even though Omega blocks happen farther north, the same heat dome effect is hitting Indian summers. Heatwaves are now arriving as early as March, stressing our wheat crops and shrinking grain sizes.
- When is it a “Heatwave”? In India, the weather office calls it a heatwave when the plains hit 40°C or hills hit 30°C, and the heat is much higher than usual.
