1 · What exactly happened?

A new government report by MoSPI (Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation) has looked deeply into how much electricity India’s Electric Vehicles (EVs) are using.

Their main finding is surprising: The government should prioritize building charging stations for commercial three-wheelers (like e-rickshaws). As more people buy EVs, knowing exactly which vehicles use the most power helps the government plan our national electricity grid so we don’t face power cuts in the future.

2 · Who is consuming the most electricity?

India currently has about 8.97 million EVs. Together, they use about 1.1% of India’s total electricity. But not all EVs consume power equally. The heavy users might surprise you.
The Power Guzzlers
Three-Wheelers (3Ws)
Even though there are 4.14 million e-rickshaws, they consume a massive 61% of all EV electricity in India because they are on the road all day, carrying heavy passenger loads.
The Most Common
Two-Wheelers (2Ws)
Electric scooters are the most common (4.37 million), but they use much less electricity because they travel shorter distances and carry less weight. (Note: 2Ws and 3Ws make up 95% of all EVs).
The Giants
Buses and Trucks (HMVs)
Electric buses and trucks are rare (only 0.4% of total EVs). But because they are huge, they consume almost 22% of the total electricity share.
The Future Threat
A Massive Surge
Right now, the power grid can handle the load. However, NITI Aayog predicts this electricity demand will shoot up dramatically by 2030 as millions more buy EVs.
  • Where to build chargers? The report says the government should focus on building fast chargers at bus depots, freight hubs, and commercial 3-wheeler corridors. Two-wheelers are easier to manage because people can simply charge them at home overnight.
  • Delhi’s Strict Ban: The Delhi government recently announced a massive rule: After March 2028, no new petrol scooters or motorcycles will be registered. By 2026-27, new CNG auto-rickshaws will also be stopped. Every new 2W and 3W sold in Delhi must be electric.
  • The National Plan (PM E-DRIVE): The central government’s scheme aims to install over 72,000 public chargers by 2026. However, India still lacks chargers. We only have 1 public charger for every 235 EVs, while the global standard is 1 charger for every 6 to 20 EVs.
  • Fixing Energy Data: This report is part of a larger plan by MoSPI (led by Dr. Rangan Banerjee) to track India’s energy use better. They noted we urgently need better data on EV power use, biofuels, and rooftop solar to reach our Net Zero climate goals.
