Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stones for three major projects in Assam, giving a strong push to the state’s connectivity and healthcare infrastructure.
The event was held in Mangaldai (Darrang district) and coincided with Sri Krishna Janmashtami and the Assamese holy month of Bhado, symbolizing cultural as well as developmental significance.
In addition, the PM unveiled a bamboo-based ethanol plant and a Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit at the Numaligarh Refinery in Golaghat district.
About the Three Mega Projects
Guwahati Ring Road Project
Estimated Cost: ₹4,530 crore
Details: 118.5 km six-lane ring road connecting Kamrup and Darrang districts of Assam with Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya.
Infrastructure: Includes flyovers, bridges, road-over-bridges, and upgraded stretches of existing highways.
Key Feature: Integration of the upcoming Kuruwa–Narengi bridge across the Brahmaputra.
Objective: Decongest Guwahati city, provide alternate routes, enhance inter-district connectivity, and promote the growth of satellite townships.
Kuruwa–Narengi Bridge across Brahmaputra
Estimated Cost: ₹1,200 crore
Length: About 3 km.
Connectivity: Links Kuruwa (Darrang district) to Narengi (Guwahati).
Significance: Reduces dependence on congested existing river crossings, cuts travel time between Guwahati and northern districts, and improves trade and emergency mobility.
Darrang Medical College & Hospital
Estimated Cost: ₹570 crore
Infrastructure: 430-bed, seven-storey hospital, new medical college, BSc Nursing College, and GNM school.
Capacity: 100 MBBS seats annually.
Objective: Expand healthcare access in Darrang and neighbouring districts, reduce load on existing hospitals, and create more trained healthcare professionals for Assam.
