Mission Senehjori

The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region has launched Mission Senehjori, a cluster-based initiative to develop Assam’s Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile ecosystem.

What is Mission Senehjori?

• Mission Senehjori is a three-year flagship initiative (2026–2028) aimed at strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain.
• It is spearheaded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region in convergence with the Government of Assam, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles and other Central agencies.
• The Mission has an estimated investment of ₹396–411 crore, including support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

Objectives of the Mission

• It aims to increase the income of nearly 2.6 lakh rearer and weaver families associated with Muga silk.
• It seeks to transform Muga silk from a traditional livelihood activity into a premium, traceable and export-oriented industry.
• It aims to strengthen production, processing, branding, marketing and tourism linked to Muga silk.

Key Features

• The Mission follows a cluster-based approach covering major Muga-producing districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Majuli, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sualkuchi.
• It will establish five modern Muga reeling units and one Muga spun silk mill.
• It will promote Farmer Producer Organisations, Common Facility Centres and digital traceability systems.
• It will strengthen Geographical Indication authentication, branding and export promotion under the unified brand “Senehjori”.
• It will also develop a Muga Silk Trail, Silk Tourism Park and Muga Utsav to promote cultural tourism.

Why is Muga Silk Important?

• Muga silk is the world’s only naturally golden silk and is popularly known as the “Golden Silk of India.”
• It is indigenous to Assam, which accounts for nearly 90% of global Muga silk production.
• It is produced by the silkworm Antheraea assamensis (feeds on Som, soaul tree), which is endemic to Northeast India.
• It is renowned for its natural golden sheen, durability and cultural significance.
• Muga silk received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag in 2007 and is India’s first GI-tagged silk.
• Major Regions in Assam: Muga culture is mainly distributed in the districts of Kamrup, Goalpara, Udalguri, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur & Dhemaji.

Significance

• The mission will strengthen Assam’s traditional silk economy and generate rural employment.
• It will support the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat through local production and exports.
• It will help preserve Assam’s rich textile heritage while integrating it with global markets.
