Direct Proof of Gene Jumping

1 · What is the news in simple words?

For the very first time, scientists in Germany have visually recorded a biological miracle: an RNA molecule (called an intron) spontaneously “jumping” from one microscopic organism into an entirely different species.
Usually, genes jump between bacteria with the help of a delivery courier, like a virus. But in this historic observation, the RNA molecule jumped completely on its own without any carrier. This is the first direct visual proof of independent Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) happening between two entirely distinct domains of life (Bacteria and Archaea).

2 · How do genes jump between different species?

Normally, genes pass from parents to children (Vertical Gene Transfer). When genes are shared between two unrelated living organisms, it is called Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT). Let us understand the mechanisms behind this new discovery:

What Are Jumping Genes?
Transposons & Introns
Discovered in 1950 by Barbara McClintock, jumping genes are DNA bits that move around. An intron is a non-coding RNA piece that can cut itself out of a gene, form a stable circle, and hop into foreign DNA!
The Lab Drama
Predator vs. Prey
Scientists observed a tiny predator bacterium attack a methane-producing prey (Archaea). As the predator broke open and killed its prey, the circular intron RNA exited the predator’s cell and leaped into the prey!
Why is it stable?
The Circular Shape
Most RNA strands are linear (straight lines) and get destroyed easily by cellular immune defenses. Because this jumping intron loops itself into a closed circular shape, it easily survives in a new host!
Why do we care?
Superbugs & Vaccines
Gene jumping is the main way harmful bacteria share drug-resistance shields to become superbugs. But we can also use this super-stable circular shape to design next-generation vaccines that last much longer in human blood!

  • Cancer Connection: Malfunctioning transposable elements can cause severe genomic instability within human cells, which often kick-starts the development of various human cancers.
  • India’s Vaccine Future: Under the National Biopharma Mission, Indian scientists can study this circular RNA template to engineer cheaper, longer-lasting vaccines locally, reducing our reliance on foreign mRNA patents.

UPSC Prelims Quick Facts: India’s Biotech Rules & Bodies
GEAC Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee. A statutory body under the MoEFCC responsible for approving large-scale open-air use of hazardous microorganisms and genetically engineered cells.
RCGM Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation. Operates under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to monitor safety in ongoing high-risk laboratory experiments.
Rules, 1989 All genetic manipulation and biosafety protocols in India are legally governed by the Rules, 1989, framed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Fighting AMR India has high rates of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Understanding gene jumping allows scientists to create targeted drugs that disrupt the way superbugs share drug-resistant traits in hospitals.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to horizontal gene transfer and biosafety regulations in India, consider the following statements:

  1. Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) strictly involves the transmission of genetic material from a parent organism to its offspring via asexual reproduction.
  2. In India, the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is constituted under the statutory framework of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  3. Circular RNA structures exhibit higher chemical and biological stability within cellular environments compared to linear mRNA strands.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Incorrect (the trap): The transfer of genes from parent to offspring is called Vertical Gene Transfer. Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) refers to the sharing of genetic material between entirely unrelated organisms that are not parent and child.
  • Statement 2 — Correct: The GEAC is India’s apex statutory biotech regulatory body, functioning under the MoEFCC per the Rules, 1989 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  • Statement 3 — Correct: Because circular RNA forms a closed loop without exposed ends, it easily resists cellular immune degradation, making it much more stable and durable than standard linear mRNA.
