1 · What exactly happened?

During his recent diplomatic tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated a massive joint project to restore the magnificent Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been chosen to lead this delicate restoration work. PM Modi called this effort a shining example of the deep, centuries-old civilizational bonds between the two nations. (After this stop, the PM also visited Melbourne, Australia, to strengthen strategic ties).

2 · The Glory of the Prambanan Temple

Built in the 9th/10th century CE during the Mataram Kingdom, Prambanan (also known locally as Roro Jonggrang) is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia. It stands as a beautiful, towering reminder of India’s cultural footprint across Southeast Asia.
The Deities
The Sacred Trimurti
The temple complex is dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The central and most prominent shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva, featuring a massive spire that reaches 47 meters into the sky.
The Design
A Cosmic Map
The complex is laid out in three concentric squares. These perfectly represent Hindu cosmological concepts of the universe: Bhurloka (base), Bhuvarloka (middle), and Svarloka (top).
The Carvings
The Ramayana in Stone
The inner walls of the central temples are an open-air picture book. They are adorned with intricate, continuous bas-relief carvings that beautifully narrate the entire epic of the Ramayana.
The Big Picture
Heritage Diplomacy
This isn’t just about old buildings. This is India’s “Soft Power”. While China pushes economic loans in ASEAN, India uses shared cultural history to build deep, emotional trust with its neighbours.
  • ASI’s Global Reach: The ASI doesn’t just work in India. They have beautifully restored the Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm temples in Cambodia, the My Son temples in Vietnam, and the Ananda Temple in Myanmar.
  • Act East Policy: Indonesia is the largest economy in the ASEAN group and a critical maritime neighbour for India. Working together on a non-controversial, deeply respectful project like this strengthens bilateral ties massively.
  • Global Recognition: Because of its breathtaking architecture and historical importance, the Prambanan Temple Compounds was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
