Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati have developed an innovative electrode coating technology that significantly improves the efficiency and durability of green hydrogen production through solar-powered water splitting.

What is Innovation?

  • The research has been published in the journal Small.
  • It focuses on Photo-Assisted Electrochemical Water Splitting, a process that uses sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
  • Green hydrogen produced through this method can help decarbonise sectors such as steel, fertilisers, refining and heavy transport.

Key Challenge Addressed

Conventional solar water-splitting systems face two major problems:

  • Catalyst Delamination: Catalyst coatings gradually peel off from electrodes, reducing efficiency and lifespan.
  • Gas Bubble Accumulation: Hydrogen and oxygen bubbles stick to electrode surfaces, blocking active sites and lowering output.

How Does New Technology Work?

Researchers developed a composite coating using:

  • Graphitic Carbon Nitride (a two-dimensional photocatalyst).
  • Bubble-repellent Hydrogel.
  • Porous Nickel Foam substrate.

Unlike conventional methods, the photocatalyst is embedded within the coating structure, improving adhesion and stability.

The design enables faster bubble release, keeping catalytic surfaces active.

Major Outcomes

The technology achieved:

  • 51% higher hydrogen production.
  • 44% higher oxygen production compared to conventional systems.

It enhances system durability and can reduce the cost of green hydrogen generation.

Supports the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (2023), launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The mission aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen.
