A new Nature Climate Change study shows that global warming is increasing sharp day-to-day temperature fluctuations, especially in mid–low latitudes (South Asia, East Asia, Africa, South America). These swings pose rising risks to human health and agriculture.
Rising Global Climate Extremes
- Daily temperature variation has increased by 20–50 percent in many regions.
- Heatwaves are becoming longer and 4 times more frequent (World Meteorological Organization).
- Heavy rainfall events have increased by ~30 percent since the 1950s.
Causes, Concerns and Way Ahead
Causes | Concerns | Way Ahead |
| Higher greenhouse gases | Crop stress, heat mortality | Strengthen early warning systems |
| Jet-stream instability | Energy and water demand spikes | Urban heat action plans |
| Ocean warming | Extreme rainfall and floods | Faster mitigation under Paris Agreement |
Q. Increasing day-to-day temperature variability is mainly linked to which of the following?
- Jet-stream shifts
- Rising greenhouse gases
- Ocean surface warming
Select the correct answer:
A. 1 and 2 only, B. 2 and 3 only,
C. 1 and 3 only, D. 1, 2 and 3
