E20 Fuel Contamination: Why Are Vehicles Getting Water in Their Petrol?

1 · What is the news in simple words?

With the monsoon in full swing, petrol pump owners and motorists are facing a weird problem: viral videos show vehicles receiving a muddy, watery mixture from fuel dispensers, leading to sudden engine breakdowns!
Why is this happening? Across India, we have shifted to mandatory E20 fuel (petrol blended with 20% ethanol). While ethanol is fantastic for reducing pollution and saving foreign exchange, it has one tricky chemical property: it loves absorbing moisture from the air and rain, leading to fuel contamination in underground tanks.

2 · Why does water mix with petrol? The Science Behind It

Usually, oil and water do not mix. But when you add ethanol into the equation, the chemistry inside an underground fuel tank changes completely:

Ethanol is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it strongly attracts and absorbs water molecules from its surrounding environment, especially in humid coastal weather or during heavy monsoon rains.

If water inside a storage tank exceeds ~0.5% (from rain seepage or condensation), ethanol abandons the petrol and binds with the water. This heavy water-ethanol mixture splits and sinks to the bottom of the tank!

Fuel dispensers always suck petrol from the very bottom of the underground tank. During phase separation, cars end up getting filled with this watery bottom layer instead of actual petrol, damaging injectors and choking the engine!

Legacy steel tanks rust easily with ethanol. Dealers now have to manually check tanks every two hours with dipsticks and bear heavy financial losses out of their own pockets when contaminated fuel has to be discarded.

  • What is the way forward? While E20 is vital for our green energy goals, we urgently need to upgrade retail infrastructure. We must modernize old storage tanks, install specialized water-alert filters in dispensers, and share financial risks fairly between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and pump owners.
