1 · The Core Issue
| On June 23, 2026, China’s new supercomputer, LineShine, was crowned the world’s fastest on the famous TOP500 list. It reached a staggering speed of 2.198 exaflops, easily beating the previous American champion, El Capitan.
What makes this truly amazing? LineShine is built entirely using Chinese technology. It uses zero parts from Western giants like Nvidia or Intel. This achievement happened just one day after the US President signed an order to protect America’s lead in advanced computing. |
2 · Breaking it Down
| What is a supercomputer? It is a machine that links thousands of processors together to solve massive problems. An exaflop means the computer can do one quintillion (a billion billion) calculations in a single second! The TOP500 list ranks these giant machines twice a year using a speed test called the Linpack benchmark. |
|
The Machine
100% Homegrown
LineShine is completely indigenous. Interestingly, it is the first machine ever to cross 2 exaflops using only basic processors (CPUs), without needing special graphics chips (GPUs) that power modern AI.
|
The Catch
Math vs. AI
For traditional heavy math, LineShine is #1. But on tests designed specifically for AI workloads, it drops to #4. America’s El Capitan is still the king when it comes to Artificial Intelligence.

|
The Geopolitics
Sanctions Backfired?
US export bans were meant to slow China down. Instead, they forced China to become completely self-reliant. LineShine is China’s way of proving they don’t need Western chips to win.

India’s Setup
Building the Foundation
India is pushing forward through the National Supercomputing Mission, IndiaAI Mission, and the Semiconductor Mission. Our flagship AI computer is AIRAWAT in Pune.
|
- The Elite Club: There are only five supercomputers in the world that have crossed the “exascale” mark. Before LineShine, China hadn’t topped the list since 2017.
- Efficiency Matters: While LineShine is massive, the US’s El Capitan uses much less electricity. LineShine won by using sheer size, not energy efficiency.
- The Lesson for India: Instead of just chasing top speeds, India should focus on building practical clusters for AI training (like the 10,000+ GPUs planned under the IndiaAI Mission) and designing our own chips.
