The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved two major hydro-electric projects in Arunachal Pradesh, marking a significant push towards clean energy generation and regional development in Northeast India.

About the Projects

  • The approval includes an investment of about ₹40,176 crore for two projects:
    • Kamala Hydro-electric Project (₹26,069.5 crore)
    • Kalai-II Hydro-electric Project (₹14,105.83 crore)

Key Features

Kamala Hydro-electric Project

  • It will have an installed capacity of 1,720 megawatts.
  • It is expected to generate about 6,870 million units of electricity annually.
  • It is located across Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey districts.
  • It is being implemented as a joint venture between National Hydroelectric Power Corporation and the Arunachal Pradesh government.
  • The project is expected to be completed in eight years.

Kalai-II Hydro-electric Project

  • It will have an installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts.
  • It is expected to generate about 4,852.95 million units annually.
  • It is located in the Lohit basin in Anjaw district.
  • It is being developed by THDC India Limited in partnership with the state government.
  • The project is expected to be completed in six and a half years.

Objectives and Benefits

  • The projects aim to enhance renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
  • They will contribute to regional development, employment generation, and infrastructure growth.
  • Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12 percent free power and an additional 1 percent for the Local Area Development Fund, ensuring local benefits.
