1 · What exactly happened?

India has hit a massive milestone in its dream of becoming self-reliant in military weapons. For the first time ever, India has signed a historic deal to export its locally made Astra Mk 1 missile to Indonesia.

These high-tech missiles will be fitted onto Indonesia’s Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. This big win comes along with India’s ongoing export of BrahMos cruise missiles to Southeast Asian nations like the Philippines and Vietnam, proving that India is transforming into a global defense exporter.

2 · What is an Astra Missile?

Astra (which means “weapon” in Sanskrit) is a family of Indian air-to-air missiles. It is a BVRAAM (Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile). This means a fighter pilot can shoot down an enemy jet hiding far away (more than 37 km), completely out of ordinary sight, keeping our own pilots absolutely safe.

The Current Star
Astra Mk 1 Features
Designed by DRDO and built by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). It has a range of 80 to 110 km, flies at an incredible speed of Mach 4.5 (4.5 times the speed of sound), and uses a smokeless fuel motor.
The Future Monsters
Mk 2 and Mk 3
Astra Mk 2 will reach up to 200 km using a smart re-igniting rocket motor. **Astra Mk 3 (Gandiva)** will use a futuristic Ramjet engine (SFDR) to fly past 300 km without losing speed.
Why We Need It
True Independence
Astra is India’s shield against long-range missiles used by China and Pakistan (like their PL-15). Making it locally saves India from buying expensive missiles from Europe (Meteor) or Russia (R-77).
The Money Boom
Record Defence Exports
India’s arms exports shot up by over 5500% in ten years, hitting a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025-26. The government aims to touch ₹50,000 crore by 2029!

  • A Massive Budget: To modernize our military, the defense budget for FY 2026-27 is set at a huge ₹7.85 lakh crore.
  • Banning Imports to Help India: The government has put out “Positive Indigenisation Lists,” banning the import of over 5,000 military items. This forces our armed forces to buy Indian-made parts.
  • ADITI Scheme: A ₹750 crore program designed to give direct cash grants to young tech startups and innovators making cutting-edge weapons.
  • Technology Development Fund (TDF): Run by DRDO, it gives up to ₹50 crore to small local industries to build advanced aerospace technology with free access to labs.

UPSC Prelims Quick Facts
Astra Mk 1 India’s first indigenous Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile. Built by BDL with a range of 80-110 km.
SFDR Technology Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet. A futuristic engine tech used in Astra Mk 3 that pulls in air from outside to maintain supersonic speeds over long distances.
ADITI Scheme A specialized central scheme under iDEX providing funding and grants to startups building unique defense equipment.
Positive Indigenisation Lists Official lists issued by the Ministry of Defence that ban the import of thousands of military items to promote “Make in India”.

MCQ Practice Question
Q. With reference to Indian defense systems and recent developments, consider the following statements:

  1. The Astra missile is an indigenous surface-to-air missile designed by ISRO for air defense.
  2. Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAM) are capable of hitting targets at distances beyond 20 nautical miles.
  3. The ADITI scheme provides financial grants to startups to help build innovative technologies in the defense sector.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only    (b) 2 and 3 only    (c) 1 and 3 only    (d) 1, 2 and 3

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

  • Statement 1 — Incorrect: Astra is an air-to-air missile (fired from jets to hit jets) and it was developed by DRDO, not ISRO.
  • Statement 2 — Correct: BVRAAM technology allows fighter pilots to track and hit enemy targets well beyond human visual range (greater than 20 nautical miles or 37 km).
  • Statement 3 — Correct: The ADITI scheme operates under iDEX and allocates grants to startups to build cutting-edge indigenous defense systems.
