1 · What is the news in simple words?

The Supreme Court of India has just asked the Lok Sabha Speaker to explain how 6 MPs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) were officially allowed to “merge” with their rival faction.
Imagine this: These MPs asked for your votes by fighting against their political rivals. But after winning the election, they simply switched sides and joined the very same rivals! The Court is now checking if this is legally fair, or if it completely breaks the trust of the voters who elected them.

2 · How Did the Politicians Switch Sides?

Politicians ask for our votes using a specific party symbol, promising to fight tooth and nail against their political rivals.

Politicians are saved from disqualification only if their original political party merges with another party, AND at least 2/3rds of the elected MPs agree to it.

Yes! In this historic case, the Supreme Court ruled that the Speaker acts like a judge (tribunal). If the Speaker acts unfairly or breaks the rules, the Courts absolutely have the power of Judicial Review.
